This mandarin jacket (magua) is made of yellow satin with dragons embroidered with polychrome threads. Four dragon roundels are embroidered on the chest, back, and the two sleeves of the jacket. Among the dragon roundels are auspicious patterns of peony, bats, flying clouds, and seawater. The whole jacket boasts gorgeous colors and exquisite craftsmanship. The jacket is very precious since the embroidered dragon jacket is the only extant clothing for senior officials of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. It reflects China’s superb embroidery techniques during the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom period (1851-1864).
