Excavated from an Eastern Zhou tomb at Chengqiao in Luhe District of Nanjing. Collected by the Nanjing Municipal Museum.
This bronze fu is comprised of two parts--the cover and the body. They have identical size and shape: a rectangular shape, a straight mouth, a curved belly, a flat bottom, and rectangular feet. Both the cover and the body have a pair of animal head-shaped ears. Along the rim of the cover, there are six small animal-mask buckles to join the cover and the body tightly. The top and belly of the cover and the belly of the body are decorated with snake patterns, while the feet are decorated with patterns of cirrus clouds. The same 15-character inscription is neatly engraved inside both the cover and the body.
This bronze fu, with its simple structure and exquisite craftsmanship, has the most common style of fus from the late Spring and Autumn period to the early Warring States period. It is a treasure among all the Chu-style bronze wares collected by the Nanjing Municipal Museum.
