Excavated from Longwangdang at Yongfeng Township in Pukou District of Nanjing. Collected by the Nanjing Municipal Museum.
This bronze cymbal is large in size. Its body, with the upper part larger than the lower part, is in the shape of two joined roof tiles with an olive-shaped cross section. The long hollow handle is connected to the inner chamber. To sound it, put the handle on a wooden support and beat on the zheng and gu parts.
The zheng parts on each side of the bronze cymbal are decorated with animal-mask motifs, supplemented with the cloud and thunder pattern. Crude lines are used to sketch out the contour of the animal mask, which is symmetrically arranged on the two sides of the nose. With its wide open eyes, twisted eyebrows, and high nose, the animal mask looks awe-inspiring. In between sui and gu, three groups of cloud and thunder patterns are arranged regularly. The whole body of the cymbal is covered with well-arranged decorations that have simple yet smooth lines.
