The part from the hem to the lotus pedestal of this bronze Buddha statue is damaged. The Buddha statue stands on a lotus pedestal. The Buddha, wearing his hair in a bun and an across-shoulder coat with sagging hem, makes the fear-not sign with his right hand and the mudra of supreme generosity with his left hand (presumably, as part of the left hand is damaged). On the boat-shaped halo behind the Buddha, flame patterns are shallowly engraved. On each side of the Buddha statue, there is a statue of Bodhisattva who wears a crown and puts his palms together devoutly. On the upper part of the halo are three small Buddhist statues sitting on a lotus pedestal. Engraved on the back side of the statue is “August 23 in the first year of the Datong period (AD 527)/chao □□□ made□□□”. Datong is the reign title of Emperor Liangwu, Xiao Yan, of the Liang dynasty. This Buddha statue is the only Southern Dynasties Buddha statue ever unearthed in Nanjing.
